Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal initiative launched in December 2023 to help eligible Canadians access essential dental care. Designed to support oral health across all age groups, the CDCP covers a wide range of services, ensuring that more Canadians can maintain healthy, confident smiles.

What Does the CDCP Cover?
The CDCP provides comprehensive dental coverage, including:

Preventive services: Exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants

Diagnostic services: X-rays and full dental assessments

Restorative services: Fillings, crowns, and other tooth repair treatments

Endodontic services: Root canal therapy

Prosthodontic services: Full and partial dentures

Periodontal services: Deep cleanings and gum treatments

Oral surgery: Tooth extractions and other surgical procedures
Who Qualifies for the CDCP?
Eligibility is being rolled out in phases based on age, disability status, and income. Here’s a breakdown:
Seniors (65+)

Eligibility: Canadian residents aged 65 and older

Applications opened: December 2023
Adults with a Valid Disability Tax Credit Certificate

Eligibility: Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate

Applications opened: June 27, 2024
Children Under 18

Eligibility: Canadian residents under the age of 18

Applications opened: June 27, 2024
All Other Eligible Adults (Aged 18–64)

Coverage begins: As early as June 1, 2025

CDCP Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the CDCP, applicants must meet the following:

Age: Based on phased rollout (see above)

Disability status: Must hold a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate

Income: The plan is designed for low to moderate-income Canadians. Income thresholds and co-payment details are outlined in the Cost section of the CDCP website.
How to Apply for the CDCP
Applying is simple and can be done online. Here’s how:
1. Check Your Eligibility
Confirm your eligibility based on age, income, or disability status.
2. Gather Required Documents
You’ll need the following for yourself (and your spouse or partner, if applicable):

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Date of birth
-
Full name
-
Home and mailing address
-
Details of any existing dental coverage through government programs

2023 Notice of Assessment (proof of tax filing)
3. Apply During Your Phase
Make sure to apply during the correct window for your age or eligibility group (see above).
4. Submit Your Application Online
Visit the official CDCP application portal and follow the steps to complete and submit your form.
5. Need Help?
You can apply with the help of:

A trusted person (family or friend)

A delegate (legal representative)
After You Apply
Once your application is submitted:

Confirmation: You’ll receive an enrolment confirmation from Sun Life, the CDCP administrator.

Welcome package: Within three months, you’ll receive a member card and your coverage start date.
